During 2016, Los Amigos de Valles Caldera (Los Amigos) worked with Superintendent Jorge Silva-Bañuelos to meet all National Park Service (NPS) requirements to become the official Friends Group for the Valles Caldera National Preserve. We also worked with the Superintendent and the Director of the Intermountain Region of the NPS to become the official not-for-profit Cooperating Association for the Preserve. This second agreement allows us to operate the bookstore to earn funds that will support the educational, scientific, historical, and interpretive activities of the Valles Caldera.
Los Amigos invested funds for startup costs and opened the bookstore in the Valles Caldera Entrance Station on November 28, 2016. We are very excited about this new opportunity to expand our support of the Preserve. We are pleased to have a local Jemez Springs resident, Jeffrey Woods, as our Bookstore Manager.

Los Amigos is a member of the Public Lands Alliance and our store manager was awarded a scholarship offered to small organizations to attend their annual convention and trade show held this year in Arlington, VA. Their educational programs were very helpful to our “small but mighty” organization and the trade show offered us the opportunity to see a wide variety of products and to add to the selection of merchandise that will be offered in our bookstore. Visitor convenience items and a limited amount of food and drink are also available.
The bunkhouse in the historic district will become the Visitor Center and the bookstore will move to that location when renovation work is completed.
