Geology Tour – June 5, 2016

Experience the magnificent Valles Caldera on this unique tour led by geologist Kirt Kempter in support of Los Amigos de Valles Caldera. Kirt will provide a geologic history of the caldera since the massive eruption that occurred 1.2 million years ago — a dynamic story that involves multiple volcanic eruptions within the caldera, and several caldera lakes over the past million years.
The cost will be $50 per adult, children 12 and under are free, payable at the start of the tour. Lunch is included in the cost of the tour. Participation is limited to 35 people.

Kirt Kempter, Ph.D, geologist (UT Austin) and Fulbright Fellow, has conducted fieldwork on plate tectonics and volcanism around the world, leads educational tours for the Smithsonian Institution and National Geographic, and is an instructor in the NASA astronaut-training program, teaching geologic mapping techniques. He is the author of numerous maps and articles on the geology of the Southwest.
