Supporting the Valles Caldera National Preserve for present and future generations
All donations to Los Amigos de Valles Caldera are tax deductible.
We appreciate all of our loyal members, and we thank you for your financial support, volunteer hours and interest in Los Amigos and the Preserve. We hope you will renew your membership for 2017 or join us if you are not currently a member.
Our mission is to support the Valles Caldera National Preserve for present and future generations through outreach, education, restoration, and collaboration. We are working to see an important part of our western legacy maintained, while at the same time preserving the natural wonders of one of the world’s largest calderas (extinct volcanic basins) with its unspoiled vistas, lush forests, meandering meadow streams, and the sights and sounds of abundant wildlife.
Los Amigos has been working with Superintendent Jorge Silva-Bañuelos since the Preserve transferred to the National Park Service on October 1, 2015. We became the official Friends Group and a Cooperating Association with the Park Service in September, 2016. Becoming a Cooperating Association has allowed Los Amigos to open the Valle Grande Bookstore on the Preserve. Revenue from the bookstore will support future preserve interpretive, educational, and scientific programs. We are very excited about this opportunity to expand our support of the Valles Caldera.
This year Los Amigos celebrates 10 years of helping the Preserve. The bookstore is already operating but Los Amigos will hold an official grand opening in conjunction with our 10 year birthday celebration on June 24th. Please watch for email notifications announcing the event!
Your membership supports our restoration projects and offers you the opportunity to work on them. In the ten years we have been working on the Preserve, we have brought in $1.5 million in restoration funds from Federal and State sources that flowed directly into the Preserve with no portion of the funding supporting Los Amigos. We have also contributed about $450,000 in funds and in-kind contributions of time, sweat, and energy from our volunteers.
The purpose of our restoration work is to return the Preserve to the condition it was in before extensive grazing and logging caused many roads to be developed that drained wetlands and wet meadows and poured sediment into the streams, raising stream temperature. Our projects have measurably lowered the temperature in some areas and have created or re-created at least a hundred acres of wetland and wet meadow, helping to improve water quality in the Jemez River watershed.
Los Amigos needs your support to continue to have a measurable and positive effect on the health of the Preserve. You will receive a 10% discount at the Valle Grande Bookstore with your membership renewal. All contributions to Los Amigos de Valles Caldera are tax deductible.
